What Is Microblading and How Does It Work?

What is microblading? The term “microblading” originated from a manual form of eyebrow enhancement by Asian women 25 years ago and has been practiced traditionally for decades. Due to its similarity with regular tattooing, microblading is also referred to as semi-permanent makeup. The microblading process is completely different from that of regular tattoos since it uses a manually hand held tool to insert pigment under the skin instead of machines.

For those who may be considering microblading, you may have questions about it. You’ve likely heard this ingenious cosmetic procedure called microblading but wonder what microblading is and how it is different from other forms of cosmetic tattoo such as permanent make-up.

Microblading is an alternative for people who want permanent makeup instead of having to pencil in their brows everyday.

How Does Microblading Work?

Microblading uses a manual hand held tool to deposit ink into the upper layers of the skin, which are called the dermis and epidermis. But the real question is, how long does microblading take? The procedure usually takes about  1 ½ – 2 hours and requires a secondary numbing gel to allow a comfortable procedure for the client.

Microblading can be done on any skin type, but it works best on normal to dry skin types.. If you have oily skin, you may be suited more to machine shaded brows like Powder or Ombre Brows.

In general, microblading doesn’t hurt as much as regular tattoos because a numbing gel is applied during the procedure.  You may experience some discomfort at the start of the procedure if you have sensitive skin or if you’re prone to bleeding easily — but that’s about it!

The artist you pick should be experienced, certified and insured. You should also choose someone who listens to your needs and takes a consultative approach to the service.

What’s The Aftercare Process Like?

After your procedure, you will clean the brows every 30 mins for approx 3 hours or until the lymph fluid has stopped secreting .We will also give you  Vitamin A and D aftercare balm to apply twice a day from day 2 after your treatment.

The first day  after your microblading treatment may be slightly tender, but you shouldn’t experience any major discomfort. To minimize any loss of pigment you will not be able to get the brow area wet for 7 days  after your treatment and avoid sweating , swimming or excessively touching your brows until healed ( approx 7-9 days).

You’ll need to avoid direct sunlight for at least one week however, be sure not to get any sunscreen on your freshly microblade eyebrow tattoo as it may affect their colour! You will receive detailed instructions on how to care for your brows and what things you need to do to preserve them longer.

How Often Do I Need To Come Back For A Touch Up?

The aftercare process is a vital part of the microblading healing stages. The procedure is done in 2 stages so you will need to return for the Perfection visit 4-6 weeks later. Brows need to heal for at least 28 days before the perfection visit can be scheduled.

The main reason why I highly recommend coming back for a touch-up is because your eyebrows need 2 separate procedures to get the best possible result. As you get older, your eyebrows may become thinner or more sparse due to hormonal changes or other factors such as smoking and aging. A yearly touch-up session will give you the perfect shape and colour again!

I’m pretty sure you’re wondering, how long does microblading last? Microbladed eyebrows can last anywhere from 1 to 3 years, depending on your skin type, medications ,hormones and how well you take care of them. The more sun exposure they get, the faster they will fade.
A yearly refresh touch up visit is recommended.

It’s important to note that when you first get your brows microbladed they will be darker the first 2 days than they will end up 30-40% lighter once they have healed. This is because new skin will grow over the top of the microblading and dull the pigment right down.

To Microblade Or Not To Microblade My Brows?

Overall, microblading has its pros and cons. The cons aren’t that large, as long as you properly prepare yourself for the procedure. As for the pros, there’s no wrong answer—it all depends on whether or not microblading is right for you. Think about what your brows say about you, and if microblading makes sense for the look you’re going for.

It might not be for everyone, but Microblading can give you an amazingly natural-looking brow that you’ve always wanted. I’m sure there are tons of other alternatives as well (tinting, Henna and makeup, etc).

Make sure you ask the right questions before making any final decisions. Microblading’s most positive attribute, in that sense, is its ability to give women and men eyebrows that define their shape and also give you so much more confidence .
